As EU leaders gather in Brussels to thrash out a pact to keep Britain in the bloc – described by some as Mission Impossible – our spies have told us of a plot worthy of an espionage thriller.
The Belgians – masters of the dark arts of EU politicking – are pushing for a “self-destruct” button to be worked into the language of the final deal.
They are keen that there is no chance that other countries try to use the settlement to push for their own special arrangements with the EU.
Belgium of course has a vested interest in keeping the EU together, with many EU institutions headquarted in Brussels.
So they need a licence to kill the deal if British voters choose Brexit.
