Is the solution to the refugee crisis lurking in the otherwise boring form of your boiler?
It may sound a far fetched notion but MEP Peter Liese, a German Christian Democrat, is a firm believer in the boiler.
He says that ordinary European citizens can play their part in the current refugee crisis by replacing their outdated home boiler with a new one.
Bear with us: “Especially against the background of the current refugee crisis, we need to reinforce our ambition to protect the climate as otherwise climate refugees will be an unbearable challenge for the future,” Liese said in a statement circulated on Wednesday (16 September)
Granted, the effects may not be felt “immediately”, Liese told reporters in the European Parliament. Still, over the long run, he believes “we will have many more [refugees] if we don’t act against climate change”.
There’s more to it, however. If every European household buys a new boiler, this will help make huge energy savings, which in turn means less imports of oil and gas from countries with dubious democratic records like Russia, Saudi Arabia or Qatar.
In Liese’s own words: “It’s also important to reduce our dependency from energy imports from countries such as Saudi-Arabia and Qatar.
“Wealthy people from these countries are the main source of finance for ISIS and the terror of ISIS is one of the major reasons for the refugee crisis. We should invest money to the benefit of our installers and our industry instead of financing Putin and sheiks in the Middle East.”
So that’s it – the refugee crisis and ISIS solved with a single stroke!Heard in Europe
