Newly published transcripts of phone conversations between Tony Blair and Bill Clinton have revealed just how close the “special relationship” between the UK and US leaders was.
Failed European Council President candidate Tony calls Bill “mate”, while Bill dubs Tone “bud” in the chinwags. The calls, made from 1997 to 2000, touched on issues such as the death of Princess Diana, the Northern Ireland peace process and the threat of stateless terrorism.
But Heard in Europe’s eye was caught by this exchange, highlighted on Twitter by @MrMichaelSpicer.
Isn’t it striking how Blair doesn’t seem entirely bowled over by the chat?
