Heard in Europe

Just when things looked like they couldn’t get any worse for the Greeks, Germany Commissioner Günther Oettinger has waded in with some trademark pearls of wisdom.

Oettinger told Handesblatt in an interview published today that if Greece doesn’t accept the latest offer extended by creditors, “it wouldn’t be the end of the world”.

That might sound harsh, but Oettinger isn’t your standard Greek-bashing German. In fact, Handelsblatt assures us, Oettinger even “feels deeply connected” to the country.

Günther has many friends, there and his son’s godfather is Greek. Which is nice!

We weren’t convinced until we saw proof ourselves. Luckily, Heard in Europe‘s spies spotted Oettinger living up to his Grecophile reputation at a Greek restaurant in Brussels, where he recently broke bread with outgoing Head of DG Connect Robert Madelin.
